The Woodlands Concert Band
Good Morning,

Five finalists will be competing to perform with the Woodlands Concert Band for our June concert. Three will be selected and that live audition will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 20 at Christ Church. This will take about an hour. I would like to encourage everyone to come and be an audience for this event. We would like to create as close as possible the scenario where they will be performing for our audience at the concert.

I mentioned this to the band last week, but we have some great players who are not available to play this concert, and would be valuable contributors to this event during our next season. Christ Church hosted a concert last fall that involved string players from the top Woodlands High School orchestra and wind players from the Woodlands Concert Band to create a full orchestra, singers from The Woodlands High School Chorale, Christ Church Chancel Choir, and the Woodlands Chorale to form a large choir and performed a concert with area soloists and works for choir and orchestra. It was a true community event, involving many music organizations in the area. Being in the audience, I was blown away with the quality of the performances.

This will be repeated this fall. Mihai Vatca will be playing the Rachmaninoff Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and the choir will sing the Faure Requiem, both pieces using the full, combined orchestra. Piccolo, Oboe, English Horn, Tuba and the four percussion players will only be needed for the Rachmaninoff. The remaining orchestra instrumentation will be used for both pieces. Here is the schedule at Christ Church:

Wednesday, September 13 - 6:30 PM - Rehearse the Rachmaninoff only
Wednesday, September 20 - 6:30 PM - Rehearse the Faure only
Saturday, September 23 - 7:00 PM (call time 5:00 PM) - CONCERT

This is one of the events that we as a band participate in. As a result, Christ Church does not charge us a penny to rehearse or perform at the Church. This type partnership, once very common, is disappearing, with many community bands now having to pay for facility rentals, up to $400 for each rehearsal. I am hoping that we can have the best representatives of the talent that fills our group.

The sign-up form will circulate tomorrow at rehearsal. If you will not be there and can help, respond to this email by sending your name, email, and phone number. I hope we will have more people that spots to fill. In that case, I, in consultation with your section leader, will select the players.

Finally, here is the order of music for rehearsal tomorrow night:

AN AMERICAN SONGBOOK
THE TOY TRUMPET
FANTASIA NOVA
-II DREAMS
-III PARADE
STAR SPANGLED BANNER (if time)

See you tomorrow,
Paul Worosello
