For Woodlands Trombone Christmas we have a number of arrangements by different arrangers. Most have four or five parts, and one has eight parts.
The 1st Trombone parts are in the higher range and we recommend only advanced or professional trombonists to play this part. It is not a part a beginning player should attempt.
The 2nd trombone part is usually lower in range than the 1st part, but is still recommended for advanced players.
The 3rd Trombone part (and the 4th part on 5 part pieces, and 4th, 5th, and 6th on the 8 part piece) is recommended for all players, including younger and less advanced players. All of the parts could have complicated rhythms, but the range of these parts are more moderate and easier to play for younger, less advanced players.
The 4th parts (or 5th part on the quartets, and 7th and 8th parts on the octet) should be played on Bass or Contrabass Trombone; as the range is low and frequently in the “trigger” and “pedal” range.
We encourage participation by all ages and playing abilities, but do encourage everyone to pick a part that is best suited to one’s playing abilities.
Thanks again for coming to the Woodlands Trombone Christmas.
Dave Lafferty (one of the arrangers).
